Does romance have any place in a fantasy novel?
In my opinion it does, in fact I think the genre begins to fall apart without it. A reader loves the intricate make believe world of a fantasy novel but it has to remain grounded otherwise how do people relate to it?
I think the answer to that lies in the heart. Without the heart, those characters that have been made up don't have feelings or emotions and I think the best way to engage a reader with your fantasy creatures is to show that they too have feelings and they too fall in love.
One good example of this working is twilight, although I'm not a huge fan of the series nobody can argue with the popularity of it. Was this because people related to the fantasy characters within the novel?
What do you think? Does romance have a place in the fantasy genre?
